Learn More About Bartenura Winery

Bartenura's Beginnings

This popular Italian kosher wine brand was named for Rabbi Ovadiah ben Avraham of Bertinoro, a 15th-century Italian rabbi best known for his popular commentary on the Mishnah, commonly referred to as The Bartenura. What many people don't know is that Bartenura actually started in the US with dry red wines. “Our first dry kosher imports,” said Nathan Herzog from Royal Wine Corp, “were the 1978 Bartenura Valpolicella and the Bartenura Soave.”

With locations all over Italy’s greatest regions, Bartenura Winery brings the best of Italian wine to your table. From the iconic blue bottle Moscato to the classics like Bartenura Ovadia Estates Chianti, Bartenura Winery ensures winemaking excellence in every bottle. Each of these wines has been nurtured from seed to bottle with the utmost care and attention. From spumante and chianti to moscato and prosecco, Bartenura has worked hard to earn their reputation as the maker of some of the world’s best wines.

Bartenura's Iconic Blue Bottle Moscato

We can't talk about Bartenura without mentioning their most famous wine. Bartenura Moscato is one of the most well known Italian Moscatos in the US, (beating even non-kosher brands). It is also exported to 32 countries, including France, Israel, Spain, Russia, China and throughout South America.

What made this wine so popular? They stuck to their convictions about the unique colored bottle, and it paid off. Several hip-hop artists made references to the blue bottle Moscato and it's popularity in the non-jewish market skyrocketed.

“We actually almost killed that blue bottle in the ‘90s,” says Jay Buschbaum in an interview about the winery, “we were running low and there were all of these issues with regulations and costs in terms of keeping the bottle’s blue hue. There was strong advocacy for just switching to the normal and affordable green, but there was nostalgia for keeping it blue, it’s what people remembered from their seders, I’m glad we did, as now there are several Moscato brands copying it.”
